American Gods: Neil Gaiman
It took me a while to get through this book but I liked it. I love mythology and was super into reading this, especially after seeing the commercials and clips for the TV adaptation on Starz. I really enjoyed how most of this book took place in the Midwest as I am from North-Central Illinois and spent a lot of time in Wisconsin as a child, so I felt like I was really there. Neil Gaiman did a fantastic job of mixing the different mythologies of different cultures, such as Odin and Czernobog being friendly with a leprechaun. Shadow being the main story teller and introduces the readers to everything going on around him.To those who aren't familiar with certain culture's beliefs get a good intro into different thoughts and history behind what we thought we knew, for example, Thor and Loki are not actually sibling in the Norse Pantheon like Marvel wants us all to think. We also get to see what we as Americans seem to worship now, such as the Internet, sex and media. the battle of the old gods versus the new gods makes you really think about what we should be worshiping and what we are really doing to our heritage by forgetting it.
Pros:
Imagery
Mix of cultures coming together to battle new gods
Ideas of "new" gods
Cons:
Way to into details on settings(I've been to the House on the Rock, it's not that great)
Odin is mean
